One of the three victims in AWere shooting incidence has been pronounced dead following a fracas that ensured in the village yesterday.
According to Jimmy Patrick Okema, Public Relation Officer Police in Aswa region the incidence happened when two Police officers identified as Geoffrey Ochan [No 26485 CPL] an SPC Lukecha Paul [No 2561] the officer in charge of Awere Police station had gone to enforce an arrest of one Moses Okello an army officer accused of threatening violence, doing grievous harm and attempted murder.
It is alleged that Okello Moses was torturing a 69 years old woman identified as Abur Marcellina by piercing her private parts repeatedly in Akelotoo village, Lagile Parish, Awere Sub County in Pader District.
When Kenneth Okello, brother to the victim came to rescue her sister, Moses retaliated by spearing him in the hand.
The violence melted on the two provoked the community into action as they pelted stones at police and the suspect resulting into shooting in the air to disperse the crowd.
Incidentally three people – Odongo Bosco, Canogura Samuel and Obedgiu Francis were hit by stray bullets as the prime suspect escaped.
The three above were rushed to Lagile Health Centre II. However, with worsening health condition Odong and Obedgiu were immediately referred to Lira Regional Referral hospital.
Today morning Police announced the death of one of the youth saying,
“It’s unfortunate Odongo Bosco passed on due to injuries sustained in the stomach, Postmortem has been done and the body handed over to the family for burial” – Okema Said.
He appealed to local leaders to support Police in identifying those who were involved in pelting stones including the suspect so that they are apprehended for the law to take its course.
Even then, Okema is keen to say, Pte Okello Moses a UPDF officer and prime suspect in the case was still at large.
The incidence comes barely weeks after President Museveni warned the population against throwing stones at security officers as he also gave them a greenlight to fire live bullets to groups of people that are fighting them in rural areas.
Mr Museveni who was addressing the nation on 14th Tuesday April 20, 2020 at Nakasero State lodge said that most people in rural areas are always throwing stones to security officers.
“The other day we beat up some people who were throwing stones. Please stop throwing stones to officers because it can result in loss of life of an officer in case he was not having protective gears like one of the Police officers Aliong who was stoned in Kampala. So if you continue doing these officers will fire live bullets in self-defence,” he said.
Unlike in Kampala he stretched …….“Not here in Kampala, here officers have protective gears but in rural areas, officers don’t have gears. You beat me and beat you until I subdue you, use force in self-defense and arrest. An attack on a soldier is a dangerous move, they are going to work but you attack them if you don’t stop, they can shoot you. You should issue them standing orders, how can you beat me? a soldier! I must make you lose appetite of beating.”
He added that no one is supposed to beat an officer who is enforcing a law or a directive. Last week a soldier was attacked by a civilian and his eye removed.
