#URN – Police in Kitgum district have arrested the in charge of Orom Health Centre III for allegedly extorting money from a gunshot victim who had asked for an ambulance.
Thomas Ojok, the Senior Clinical Officer at the Health Centre and his driver, Walter Otema the driver of the said government ambulance in question were arrested on the orders of William Komakech, Kitgum Resident District Commissioner on Saturday morning.
Addressing the press, Komakech revealed that Ojok had been instructed to dispatch an ambulance to transport a man who had been shot by suspected Karamojong cattle rustlers on Friday.
According to Komakech, Yoweri Omony 37, the victim is said to have been attacked by armed cattle rustlers in a botched raid at his home in Morocolong village, Katwotwo parish, about ten kilometers from Orom Health Center III.
On the centrally, the clinical officer is alleged to have sent the ambulance driver with a notice to collect 200,000 Shillings from the victim as fuel fee.
He notes that the driver returned to the Health Centre without the victim who was left bleeding because his family members could not raise the said money.
The two have been locked behind bars at Orom Police Post waiting transfer to Kitgum Central Police Station where they will be charged with negligence of duty.
Komakech warned health officials to desist from taking advantage of the current ban on public transport to make money from vulnerable patients using government vehicles. ……. #URN
